NO SURPRISE: MASSIVE CABELA’S OTTAWA GRAND OPENING DELIGHTS OUTDOOR AND NATURE ENTHUSIASTS IN THE CAPITAL

CABELAS OTTAWA: LOVE HUNTING, FISHING, ARCHERY, NATURE AND THE OUTDOORS?

It shouldn’t come as a surprise really. After all, Canada is a huge country with a majority of the land still uninhabited, still considered very much the outdoors. So when nature enthusiasts and avid fans of hunting, fishing, archery, camping, boating, ATV, RV, etc. flock (pardon the pun!) to the Grand Opening of Cabela’s Ottawa, it’s just but a natural thing.

There are literally hundreds of people who have left very enthusiastic comments on the Cabela’s Ottawa’s Grand Opening page on Facebook expressing their delight and anticipation to when the door officially opens to the public. In the same respect, there are a hundred more willing to line up outside the store waiting for nature lover’s version of Disneyland to finally open.

Again… Not surprising.

Just fascinating. I suppose it’s more of a riveting revelation for me that in this age of technology and endless stream of social media chatter, there’s still a grand part of the population that’s interested in sports and activities related and connected to Mother Nature. After a special visit to Cabela’s Ottawa during the pre-opening Media VIP Preview event, I can now understand why.

OTTAWA WELCOMES CABELA’S TO THE CAPITAL

On a warm September night, E and I headed to Kanata with an initial plan of doing the usual photo shoot and interview with key Cabela’s representatives and then we’ll be off our merry way back to the ‘city.’ I was mostly excited about the archery section. It’s not everyday I can try my Katniss Everdeen skills and I welcome any opportunity to check things off my bucket list! E and I made the silent plan that we’d stay for an hour or so.

Boy was I wrong.

Located at 3065 Palladium Drive, the 70,000-square-foot Cabelas Ottawa store is designed to surround customers in an outdoor-like experience with a rugged look and feel, complete with wildlife displays and a mountain replica. As soon as we walked in the enormous space, we can hear the calls of the wild. The sounds were such precise imitation so much so that if you close your eyes, you can actually picture yourself in the wilderness.

FASHION, FISHING, FUN AND THE BLIND

Following a warm welcome with fudge, nuts and pretzels, I naturally gravitated towards the fashion and shoes section. Cabela’s Ottawa carries an extensive camouflage section headed by Garry (camouflage of all kinds from tops to bottoms to military style onesies) as well as apparel for different kinds of outdoor activities such as hiking, hunting, fishing and more. As adventure seems to be the name of the game at Cabela’s Ottawa, I was more than willing to obliged when I was dared to get in The Blind.

Now, if you’re anything like me, you’d be already be saying The What? Well, a hunting blind or a hide or machan is a cover device for hunters, designed to reduce the chance of detection. These are especially helpful on open spaces where there are no trees or structures for hunters to hide while waiting for their prey. There are different types of blinds for different situations, such as deer blinds and duck blinds. What I tried was an elaborate, well-structured and well-designed one that was honestly incredibly cozy and comfortable.

HUNGER GAMES OR MOBY DICK AT CABELA’S, ANYONE?

As I’m all for learning a special skill that one day could prove to be life saving, I was seriously excited to try archery. A sport that no doubt has increased in popularity over the years especially with films like Hunger Games, Game of Thrones and TV Shows like Arrows. Since being a Mother of Dragons seems more complicated, Daenerys Targaryen I am not. Between channeling Khaleesi or Katniss, I think Katniss it is.

Bruce, a former world class champion in archery, heads the Archery Department of Cabela’s and he not only has the technical skills of teaching archery but is also a sage in his teaching method that it only took one bad round before I got the hang of archery. E, on the other hand, had the perfect form right off the bat. Nevertheless, holding the bow, pulling the arrow back, letting it go and seeing it hit the target (well a inch or two ‘near’ the target) was absolutely exhilarating.

And just when I thought Cabela’s Ottawa couldn’t be more fun, we joined International Travel Bloggers Ryan and Vanessa of Turnip Seeds Travel at the Fishing Section where Shane masterfully demonstrated how to tie a fly. Now, again if you’re thinking… Tie a Fly?

Well, an artificial fly or fly lure, according to Wikipedia, is a type of fishing lure, usually used in the sport of fly fishing. Though these looks like fluffy, sparkly earrings, artificial flies are an imitation of natural food sources which fly fishers present to their target species of fish while fly fishing. While it took Shane an expert 3 minutes to tie a fly, it took me about 10 times that to complete the intricate and painstaking process to tie a pretty fly!
