YOUR COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE #GGPAA: 2016 GOVERNOR GENERAL PERFORMING ARTS AWARDS AT NAC AND #TICKETGIVEAWAY
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, the Governor General’s performing arts award (#GGPAA) is THE event of the season in the nation’s capital. It’s more than an evening of pomp and circumstance, which starts with a culinary masterpiece for cocktails and canapes, it’s an evening of inspiration punctuated with a highlight ceremony celebrating the award recipients or the Laureates as they are officially called. There is, of course, the champagne and sweets after-party as well as the VIP Party held at the top of the National Arts Centre (the NAC or @CanadasNAC in Twitter and Instagram).
Over the many years that we’ve been Ottawa’s go-to destination for fashion, lifestyle and events blog, we’ve covered many fashion events and charity galas, all held for notable reasons, always in support of various great causes yet the Governor General’s performing arts award (#GGPAA) remains one of my absolute favourites since the very first one I’ve attended as guest of my friend and photographer Arne Berg (@OttawaArne).
And since the day the National Arts Centre has invited us to share the love and give-away tickets to the #GGPAA Gala, we’ve been doing it ever since and we’re quite pleased to let you know that this year, we are giving away tickets to the June 11th gala again!
AN INSPIRING EVENING CELEBRATING THE PERFORMING ARTS
Aside from the obvious excitement and fun to be had, why should you go to the Governor General’s performing arts award (#GGPAA). Here’s the exact reasons why:
I remember the very first time I attended the Ottawa Forty Under 40 Business Leader Awards by the Ottawa Business Journal and the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce, where I nominated my business partner, Fadi Ghaby, CEO of Skyfall Blue, who won an award, I left feeling very much inspired. It was a greatly motivating night for entrepreneurs and for us, it gave the push to pursue SKYFALL BLUE, our digital marketing and web development company and it has helped shaped what it is today.
The #GGPAA on the hand is such an inspiring affair for a different reason. It is celebrating Laureates who dedicated their entire lives to their art. This year, like the years before it, there are some incredible recipients who have made significant impact in the world of performing arts. Not only with their talent, skill and achievements but also through their profound contribution to the world of performing arts, music, film, etc.
HONOURING THE 2016 GOVERNOR GENERAL PERFORMING ARTS AWARD RECIPIENTS
The recipients of the GGPAA is the apex of distinction in the world of performing arts in Canada, much akin to the Nobel prize for Canadian artists. These recipients have dedicated their lives fully and completely to excelling in, encouraging, and bettering the world of performing arts right here at home. Performing arts includes but is not limited to directing, acting, producing, vocals, composing, and dancing; pretty much anything involving creation of something to be performed in front of an audience. The awards include the Lifetime Achievement Award, the RJH award for volunteerism in the arts, and the National Arts Centre award.
Did you know that each honoured Laureate receives a pure gold medallion, minted precisely for the winner, is feted with 3 different parties thrown on their behalf by distinguished offices of the government headed by the Office of the Governor General, and a fabulous red carpet reception at the country’s premier art centre, the National Arts Centre.

#WHATOWEAR: WALK THE #GGPAA RED CARPET AT 2016 GOVERNOR GENERAL PERFORMING ARTS AWARD
To give you an idea of what to wear, this is truly a time-honoured black tie event. Although we’ve seen an edgy mix in recent times. In the past, I’ve worn my mother’s vintage gown with a high side slit reminiscent of Angelina Jolie’s, an edgy clutch from Nella Bella by Tarek, a mix of old and new accessories and of course, my beautiful shoes courtesy of ALDO (BIG thanks to ALDO).
LE CHATEAU’S #LEWEDDING BOUTIQUE A WINNER AT THE GOVERNOR GENERAL PERFORMING ARTS AWARD RED CARPET
Last year, I wore LE CHATEAU from head to toe (see our past coverage of the #GGAwawards here and here) and it was absolutely a ROCK STAR on the red carpet! Even the NAC’s Director of Communications, Public Affairs ans Corporate Secretary, the beautiful Rosemary Thompson (Follow @RosiePThompson in Twitter) came over to compliment the dress, she exclaimed how exquisitely lovely is my floral gown from LE CHATEAU’s Wedding Boutique #LeWedding.
