2016 is not only the Year of the Red Monkey. It is MY YEAR OF THE MONKEY. It is the Year of the Red Monkey or the Year of the Fire Monkey, under the FIRE element characterized by ambition and adventure (not to mention being irritable but hey, let’s keep it positive!). So as we say goodbye to 2015 in the lunar calendar, the Fire Monkey will take over from the Sheep as the zodiac animal of the year in 2016.

As you may or may not know this, much of the Philippines history is highlighted with Chinese influences since the turn of the century. A huge part of the population of the Philippines are comprised of Chinese-Filipinos, descendants of Philippine-born Chinese or those who emigrated from China many years ago. In fact, Chinese Filipinos are one of the largest overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. Thus, Chinese plays such a HUGE role in the Philippines’ language, food and culture. Chinese New Year is very much part of the traditions and celebrations of Filipinos in the Philippines and abroad.
2016 IS YEAR OF THE RED MONKEY ACCORDING TO CHINESE HOROSCOPE
My family, mostly from the mother side, can trace back its roots from many Chinese ancestors so you can see a lot of my relatives, uncles, aunts, cousins look ‘CHINITO’ (which literally means little Chinese boy in Spanish but as you can imagine, this is widely used to denote of Chinese origin), which apparently also makes it hard to pinpoint me ‘ethnically,’ a guessing game (I get Inuit, Mexican, Peruana, Thai, Japanese, Cambodian and generally, Tahitian or Hawaiian) that I do not particularly enjoy with strangers but that’s a story for another day.

CHINESE ASTROLOGY: FIVE ELEMENTS AND ANIMAL SIGNS
So back to Chinese astrology. Each year is associated with a Chinese zodiac animal sign and one of the Five Elements: Gold (Metal), Water, Wood, Fire, or Earth. This means there are Five Monkeys: Fire Monkey, Water Monkey, Earth Monkey, Water Monkey and Gold Monkey. I’ll let you guess which one I am. Element-sign combinations recur every 60 years. Note the both the sign and element of your birth year are said to affect your personality and destiny.
YEAR OF THE FIRE MONKEY: PREDICTIONS FOR MONKEYS IN 2016
According to the Chinese Fortune Calendar, “Monkey contains Metal and Water based on the Chinese Five Elements Horoscopes. Metal is connected to gold. Water is connected to wisdom and danger. Therefore, we will deal with more financial events in the year of the Monkey. Monkey is a smart, naughty, wily and vigilant animal. If you want to have good return for your money investment, then you need to outsmart the Monkey.

WHAT IS YOUR CHINESE ZODIAC SIGN?
In Chinese astrology, “Metal is also connected to the Wind. That implies the status of events will be changing very quickly. Think twice before you leap when making changes for your finance, career, business relationship and people relationship.” As a monkey, I can attest to these words being true: Monkeys are known to be smart, clever and intelligent, especially in career and wealth. They are lively, flexible, quick-witted and versatile. In addition, their gentleness and honesty bring them an everlasting love life. Although they were born with enviable skills, they still have several shortcomings, such as an impetuous temper and a tendency to look down upon others. Oy!
