The Governor General’s performing arts award (GGPAA) is THE event of the season, an evening of pomp and circumstance. Starting with a culinary masterpiece for dinner, a highlight ceremony celebrating the award recipients or the Laureates as they are officially called, and of course, the champagne and sweets after-party. It is such an inspiring affair that one would consider dedicating one’s life to the arts just to be nominated for this prestigious award. This year, like the years before it, there are some incredible recipients who have made significant impact in the world of performing arts. Not only with their talent, skill and achievements but also through their profound contribution to the world of performing arts, music, film, etc. Each honoured Laureate receives a pure gold medallion, minted precisely for the winner, is feted with 3 different parties thrown on their behalf by distinguished offices of the government headed by the Office of the Governor General, and a fabulous red carpet reception at the country’s premier art centre, the National Arts Centre.
THE NAC WELCOMES THE 2015 GOVERNOR GENERAL PERFORMING ARTS AWARD
We are beyond thrilled to let you know, that once again, we are going to be in attendance and will have the pleasure and honour to share with you the festivities at the #GGAwards! You’ll see us at the red carpet welcoming guests and honoured recipients and we can’t wait to show you the Oscar-worthy red carpet fashion at the NAC. We’ve seen an edgy mix in recent times however, this has truly been a time-honoured black tie event. In the past, I’ve worn my mother’s vintage gown with a high side slit reminiscent of Angelina Jolie’s, an edgy clutch from Nella Bella by Tarek (a Canadian line of vegan purses and accessories), a variety of old and modern accessories and of course, my beautiful shoes courtesy of ALDO. This year, although I’m still unsure of what outfit (perhaps visit options from Rent Frock Repeat) to wear (see our past coverage of the #GGAwawards here and here), I know exactly what shoes and accessories to wear to the red carpet, big thanks to ALDO, which will showcase gorgeously at the red carpet. Now that Rent Frock Repeat opened up a showroom in the Byward Market, it will be easier for clients in Ottawa to have their picks of gorgeous gowns and dresses for the country’s top events and galas.
LAUREATES: 2015 GOVERNOR GENERAL PERFORMING ARTS AWARD RECIPIENTS
The recipients of the GGPAA is the apex of distinction in the world of performing arts in Canada, much akin to the Nobel prize for Canadian artists. These recipients have dedicated their lives fully and completely to excelling in, encouraging, and bettering the world of performing arts right here at home. Performing arts includes but is not limited to directing, acting, producing, vocals, composing, and dancing; pretty much anything involving creation of something to be performed in front of an audience. The awards include the Lifetime Achievement Award, the RJH award for volunteerism in the arts, and the National Arts Centre award. These awards are not only full of recognition but both the Lifetime Achievement award and the NAC award come with a $25,000 prize.
This year’s recipients are Film Maker Atom Egoyan, Singer and Songwriter Sarah McLachlan, Classical Musician Walter Boudreau, Actress and Director Diana Leblanc, 2015 Lifetime Artistic Achievement (Theatre) Award Winner R.H. Thompson, 2015 Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award for Voluntarism in the Performing Arts Recipient Michael M. Koerner and 2015 National Arts Centre Award winner, the much-celebrated contemporary filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée.
